We build garden retaining walls up to 1 metre. That covers the walls most Adelaide gardens actually need: holding a garden bed, levelling a lawn, stepping a slope enough to make the yard usable, and tidying the change in height around paving or an outdoor living area.

Above 1 metre we do not take it on. At that height a wall stops being landscaping and becomes structural work with engineering attached, and it deserves a specialist rather than a landscaper having a go at it. If your site needs one, we will tell you at the consultation and point you towards someone who does it properly.

Retaining is also the part of a garden where the work you cannot see decides everything. The stone or the timber is the bit you look at. The drainage, the footings and the backfill are the bits that determine whether the wall is still straight in 10 years.

What we build, and where we stop

Most retaining in a domestic garden is modest, and it is doing a job that has nothing to do with holding back a hillside. It is making a sloped block flat enough to use, or holding a bed so the soil stays where you put it.

That is the work we take on, and Josh has more than 20 years of it behind him.

Anything that needs to go higher than 1 metre we refer out rather than quote. It is a different trade with different insurance behind it, and we would rather say so up front than find out halfway through.

Approvals, and why the height alone will not tell you

This is the part people tend to discover late, usually when they sell the house.

Height is the main thing that decides whether a retaining wall needs council approval, but it is not the only one. What the wall is holding back matters, how close it sits to a boundary matters, and whether anything above it carries load (a driveway, a shed, a neighbour's fill) matters. The thresholds and conditions vary between councils, so a rule of thumb you read somewhere is not worth much on your specific block.

We work out what your wall actually requires before we quote it, so the number you get already accounts for it. If approval is needed, we do not start until it is in hand, and where a wall calls for an engineer's sign-off we say so rather than quietly building without one.

A wall built without the approvals it needed becomes the owner's problem rather than the builder's, and it surfaces at exactly the worst moment. We would rather lose a job than hand one of those over.

Why retaining walls fail, and it is almost never the wall

Walk past a failed retaining wall and it will usually be leaning out at the top with the joints opened up. The timber or the block is generally fine. What defeated it was water.

Soil that cannot drain holds water, and saturated soil is dramatically heavier than dry soil. A wall sized for the dry weight of the ground behind it is not sized for the wet weight, and every wet winter loads it a little further. Drainage behind the wall (an agi drain, aggregate backfill, and somewhere for the water to actually go) is not a finishing touch. It is most of the engineering.

Adelaide adds its own problem on top. Much of the plains and foothills sits on reactive clay that swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries, so the ground behind a wall moves with the seasons rather than sitting still. That makes the footings and the drainage matter more here than they would elsewhere, and it is why a wall that would have been fine in a sandier soil fails on a clay block.

Materials, and what actually suits the garden

The material is the one part of this decision that is genuinely about how you want it to look, because at this height all 3 options will do the structural job when they are built properly.

  • Treated pine sleepers with galvanised steel posts, for a warm, softer look that sits well in a planted garden, and the most economical of the 3.
  • Concrete sleepers, for a crisp modern line and the longest life of the 3, in finishes that read as stone from a couple of metres away.
  • Stone and block, for a heavier, more permanent look that suits an older Adelaide home and carries the most cost.

Common questions

How high can you build a retaining wall?

Up to 1 metre. That covers the great majority of garden retaining, and it is the height at which the work is genuinely landscaping. Above 1 metre it becomes structural work with engineering attached, and it belongs with a specialist rather than a landscaper. If your block needs one taller than that, we will say so at the consultation.

Do I need council approval for a retaining wall?

It depends on the wall and the site rather than on a single number, which is why it is worth getting a straight answer for your block instead of a rule of thumb. Height is the main trigger, and what the wall holds back, how close it sits to a boundary and whether anything above it carries load all feed into it, with the thresholds varying between councils. We work out what applies to your wall before quoting, and we do not start one that needs approval until the approval is in hand.

Why do retaining walls fail?

Almost always drainage. Soil that cannot drain holds water, wet soil is far heavier than dry soil, and a wall sized for dry ground slowly loses to wet ground over a few winters. On Adelaide's reactive clay the ground also swells and shrinks with the seasons, which works away at the footings. The drainage and the footings are where a retaining wall is actually built, and the part you can see is the last step.

Retaining changes the levels, and the levels decide where the paving, the lawn and the beds can go, so doing it inside the main project means it is set once rather than cut back into a finished garden later. If a garden project is on the horizon, this is one of the decisions worth making early.
