What's included in a Yardner garden makeover?

Every makeover is tailored to your space and budget. Typical works include a custom design, plant selection, garden clearing, pruning, weeding, fresh planting, and mulching, with rubbish removal arranged where required. We can also coordinate styling touches like pots, lighting, and outdoor furniture, or bring in other trades as needed.

Do you work on new builds and new homes?

Yes. A new home is usually handed back as a bare block: compacted clay, builder's sand and rubble, no topsoil worth planting into, and nothing between you and the neighbours. Yardner designs and builds the whole garden from that starting point, including levels, drainage, soil, edging, irrigation, lawn, screening, and the mature planting that stops a brand-new house looking raw. Established garden or bare block, it is the same crew and the same design process.

Can I request specific plants or features?

Yes. If there are plants, colours, or styles you love, whether a native garden, a Mediterranean look, a privacy hedge, or a feature magnolia by the front door, tell us at your design consult. We work your wishlist into the plan where it suits the space and Adelaide's climate, and suggest alternatives for anything unlikely to thrive here.

How long does a garden makeover take?

It depends on size and scope. Smaller projects wrap up in a couple of days; larger transformations run for several weeks or more. Timelines are agreed up-front, and we can phase bigger projects to suit your schedule or budget. Working to an open home or event? Tell us and we plan around it.

Not for the on-site work, as long as the crew has access to the garden and water. We do recommend being present for the design consult, and reachable by phone during key stages for any quick decisions. Many clients prefer to come home to a finished garden.

Do you remove green waste and leave the site clean?

Where green waste removal is required, it is included in your proposal. Either way, we always leave your property clean and tidy at the end of every job.

Yardner designs and installs irrigation in-house, which means the watering is planned alongside the planting rather than added on afterwards by somebody who has never seen the design.

We take new installs and full replacements. We do not take repair callouts on a system somebody else laid, because diagnosing pipework you cannot see and did not put in costs you more in time than the repair is worth. If we installed it, that is a different matter and it is ours to put right.

Irrigation is at its cheapest before the garden goes in and at its most expensive once everything is planted and paved. If a garden project is on the horizon, this is the part worth deciding early.

New installs and replacements, and why we stop there

A new system, or a full replacement of one that has given up, is work we can stand behind because we control every part of it: the layout, the pipe, the zoning and the controller.

Chasing a fault through somebody else's system is a different job. The pipe runs are unknown, the fittings are whatever was on the van that day, and the honest quote is open-ended. We would rather tell you that than take the callout and hand you a bill you did not expect.

Anything we install carries our warranty, so if a system we laid plays up, that is ours to fix and there is no callout conversation to have.

Designed around the planting, not bolted on afterwards

Plants do not all drink the same way. Lawn wants even, shallow, frequent water. Established shrubs want less, deeper, and further apart. Natives mostly want to be left alone once they are away.

Put them on the same zone and something is always wrong: either the lawn is thirsty or the natives are drowning. Zoning the system to the planting plan is the whole point, and it is only possible when the person laying the pipe has seen the plan.

That is the practical argument for doing it in-house rather than briefing it out.

What an Adelaide summer actually asks of a system

A run of 40 degree days is the test, and it finds every shortcut. Too few zones and the pressure drops so far that the last sprinkler dribbles. Poor scheduling and half the water is gone to evaporation before it reaches a root.

We size the zones to the available pressure and flow rather than to a catalogue, set the controller for an Adelaide summer rather than a factory default, and walk you through changing it when the season turns.

Do you install the irrigation yourselves?

Yes. Irrigation is our own work, not passed to somebody else, so the watering is designed alongside the planting by the same crew that puts the garden in.

Will you repair my existing system?

Not as a standalone job, and we would rather be straight about why. Tracing a fault through pipework we did not lay and cannot see is open-ended work, and the honest quote for it is worse value than you would expect. New installs and full replacements are what we take on. Anything we install ourselves is covered by our warranty.

When is the right time to put irrigation in?

Before the planting and the paving, every time. Laying pipe through a finished garden means lifting what is already there, and that cost is entirely avoidable if the decision is made early.

Does an irrigation system use more water than hand watering?

A well-designed one uses less. Water goes to the root zone on a schedule that suits the season rather than to the paths and the fence line whenever somebody remembers. The saving comes from the zoning and the timing, which is where the design work goes.
